About
In his new production for the Vienna State Opera, Ersan Mondtag places the working world of the pearl fishers at the center—transposing it into a present shaped by the logic of fashion. What appears in the libretto as dangerous diving for precious objects becomes legible as part of a global production chain: from the extraction of raw materials through processing and refinement to those moments in which value is staged as a gleaming object in exclusive boutiques and luxurious retail spaces. Visual environments reminiscent of dye works and industrial workplaces are set against these shimmering surfaces, behind which wealth accumulates. The sea here is not a romantic backdrop, but a risky field of business. Within this context, the rituals of the pearl fishers gain new sharpness. The priestess’s vow of silence and the belief in protection and prosperity appear as part of an order that renders the conditions of labor and value creation invisible, while simultaneously nurturing the hope of being part of this promise. Between chorus and soloists, a field of tension emerges between public declaration and private longing: when Leïla wrestles in prayer for forgiveness, or when Zurga wavers between claims to power and former friendship, they stand under the gaze of a community that watches closely. Bizet’s early masterpiece thus appears not as distant exotic color, but as an opera about labor and desire, about the price of loyalty and the value of a pearl that does not reveal its origin.
