Orchester-Lunchkonzert mit Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla

The Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla debuts with Zurich audience in 2024 performing an opera by Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996) at the Salzburg Festival. Weinberg was a close associate of Shostakovich, who supported him at the beginning of his career: The two showed each other their works before publication, and when Weinberg was arrested under Stalin's regime, Shostakovich intervened with a bold letter on his behalf. Weinberg's Symphony No. 5 does not conform to Stalin's requirements as expected: The finale is not triumphant but surprisingly restrained. Before it, he repeatedly presents an ideal world against the brutal reality – and a grief that is poignantly expressed in touching brass solos.
