About
The annual Chamber Music Lunch Concerts present Swiss-inspired chamber music. In the last concert of this series, Mezzosoprano Isabel Pfefferkorn sings the Wesendonck-Lieder, which a passionate Richard Wagner wrote in Zurich as a tribute to Mathilde Wesendonck, wife of his patron Otto Wesendonck. Additionally, there is Strauss' 'Metamorphosen' from 1946, dedicated to Basel conductor and patron Paul Sacher: Sacher had commissioned a work for string orchestra, and Strauss used as a basis a long-lost Septet, in which he – fittingly with the title – subjected a theme from Beethoven's 'Eroica' to various transformations. Only in 1990 was a score discovered that provided hints about the original instrumentation, which was then reconstructed.
