Programme
- Wilhelm StenhammarSinfonie Nr. 2 g-Moll op. 34
About
Who was Wilhelm Stenhammar? The Swedish composer, pianist and conductor is still considered a hidden gem among Scandinavian Late Romantics. However, his Symphony No. 2 has become increasingly performed for good reasons: The work, which was already applauded at its premiere in 1915 in Gothenburg, combines refined and straightforwardly folk musical elements with classical heritage. The Symphony plays with church modes and the form of fugue, with lyrical sounds and grand brass solos. It offers Paavo Järvi and the orchestra ample opportunity to showcase musical charm and character.
