In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many composers grappled with the question of a national style. In this program, Paavo Järvi conducts answers from three countries: Debussy brought French music to shimmer and hover, Dvořák allowed himself to be inspired by the Bohemian landscape where he spent his summers when composing his Symphony No. 8. And then there is the Violin Concerto No. 1 from 1916 by the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski: This highly virtuosic, extremely colorful instrumental work is a key piece of its time—and a signature piece of the Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili.
