About
Serenades originally received their name from evening outdoor stand-up concerts. Even when they were adopted for the concert hall, they retained their light and entertaining tone. This applies to Beethoven's D-Major Serenade from his early years in Vienna as well as Ernst von Dohnányi's Serenade in C-Major, which reveals a certain Beethoven influence in the middle. Both works begin with a march, both refer to eastern European inspiration. In between, there is Jean Françaix' early string trio: No serenade per se, but a lively work that fits perfectly for a morning stand-up concert.
