About
The “Flying Dutchman” is not like the men who populate Senta’s provincial world. An outsider like herself, and one haunted by a grim fate, his story has fascinated her from an early age: once, the Dutchman cursed God; as punishment, he must sail the world’s oceans in his ghost ship until a loving woman frees him from his curse. Senta is destined to alter the fate of the legendary sailor – and, thereby, her own. In Richard Wagner’s œuvre, “The Flying Dutchman” marks the decisive threshold between works still oriented towards the opera of numbers and the development of his music drama, in which motifs, psychology and dramatic coherence come together programmatically for the first time.
