About
Marco Goeckes The Lover is based on the novel L’Amant by Marguerite Duras from the year 1984. In partially autobiographical fragments, the author tells of the encounter between a fifteen-year-old French girl and a significantly older Chinese lover in the former colonial Indochina (today's Vietnam). While the book caused discussions about sexuality, dependency, and colonial relationships upon its release, Goeckes choreography deliberately focuses on the interpersonal dimensions of the story. Duras’ elliptical, fragmentary narrative style, permeated by memory layers, silent observations, and intermediate tones, is translated by Goecke into a choreographic language that does not depict linear plot but carries feelings and inner conflicts in precisely set movement impulses: longing, guilt, power, love, and desire are condensed into movements that make the body visible as a medium of memory, desire, and social constraints. Musically, compositions by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Frédéric Chopin, Unsuk Chin, and Gabriel Fauré merge to form a soundscape equally influenced by memory and imagination as the literary source material. Goecke, one of the most influential choreographers of the present, has established his unique signature with over sixty pieces worldwide. In The Lover, this is evident through flirtatious movements, impulsive body reactions, and an expressive radicality that makes every detail significant. His production is not a romantic story but a radical, poetic meditation on longing for love, dependencies, and the struggle for self-determination. Recommended for ages 12 and up. Cast:
