- Giuseppe VerdiLa forza del destino
About
Opera in Four Acts (1862, 1869)
Music by Giuseppe Verdi Text by Francesco Maria Piave, New Version by Antonio Ghislanzoni
Is it fate or a tragic coincidence? Leonora meets her lover Alvaro secretly. However, they are confronted by Leonora's father who strongly opposes this relationship. To de-escalate the situation, Alvaro throws away his weapon – but a shot is fired and the father dies.
More and more, the characters are drawn into a whirlpool of guilt, revenge, and pursuit.
In La forza del destino, Giuseppe Verdi powerfully portrays existential conflicts and repeatedly presents them in a musical tableau contrasting religious devotion with the tumult of war. Wide-ranging arias reveal psychological depths, powerful ensembles and choral numbers drive the sometimes ironic inevitability of events forward.
With Philippe Jordan conducting, an expert on Verdi's music is at the helm. Vasily Barkhatov directs the narrative repeatedly back to the traumatic event at the beginning of the piece and explores the emotional lives of the characters from various perspectives.
