About
Tragedy in Two Acts (1831) by Vincenzo Bellini, text by Felice Romani
The will to resist the Romans grows among the Gauls. Norma should finally give the signal for an uprising against the oppressors. However, she hesitates due to a conflict of conscience: With the Roman Pollione, Norma has two children whom she keeps hidden from public view. When she learns that Pollione loves Adalgisa and wants to flee with her, her situation seems hopeless. If Norma reveals her double life, she risks her reputation and that of her children.
Vincenzo Bellini's 1831 successful opera is considered the epitome of Belcanto – and offers so much more than just beautiful singing. Already Richard Wagner recognized that the extremely dramatic music describes a 'Seelengemälde' (soul portrait) of the protagonist. Director Vasily Barkhatov emphasizes in his interpretation Norma's inner turmoil between her public role and personal feelings against the backdrop of a political revolution.
