About
Melodramma in Three Acts (1900)
Music by Giacomo Puccini
Text by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica after Victorien Sardou
As revolutionary-minded painter Mario Cavaradossi attempts to secretly help a politically persecuted individual escape, his lover, the famous singer Floria Tosca, believes he is betraying her with another woman. The ruthless police chief Scarpia exploits her jealousy to arrest Cavaradossi and subsequently demands a night with Tosca in exchange for the release of his lover.
With a strict dramatic structure and pronounced realism, Puccini created one of his sharpest and most dramatic works – a milestone in opera history.
Set against the backdrop of the conflict between Napoleon's revolutionary army and the Habsburg-papal troops in 1800, which becomes the protagonists' downfall, Puccini transports the audience acoustically to the center of Rome: to the Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle, the Palazzo Farnese, and the Castel Sant'Angelo, each of which Puccini gave a unique musical color.
In the production of Latvian theater director Alvis Hermanis, the singers move in a psychologically dense narrative, set in the time period of the opera's creation around 1900. The scenic representation is supplemented by an elaborate Graphic Novel designed by Set and Costume Designer Kristīne Jurjāne, which plays at the original locations of June 17 and 18, 1800 in Rome and is projected onto a stage design of monumental representative architecture.
