About
Great Opera in two acts (1791) Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Text by Emanuel Schikaneder It is one of the classics in the repertoire of the Staatsoper: August Everdings Production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts The Magic Flute. Unique is the reconstruction of the 1816 decorations for the then Hofoper Unter den Linden by Karl Friedrich Schinkel – including, for example, the famous starry sky of the Queen of the Night, an icon of stage design that fascinates audiences then and now. Museum-like was far from the director Everding: The stage world according to now more than 200 year old designs came to life through a timeless, passionate production, which premiered at the Staatsoper in 1994, but until today has not lost any of its spirit and wit. Prince Tamino is saved at the last second from a giant serpent by the three ladies of the Queen of the Night. They show him a picture of the daughter of the Queen, Pamina, whom he immediately falls in love with. Together with the eccentric bird-catcher Papageno, he sets out on a journey to find his love, which – as he learns – is in the hands of the Sun Priest Sarastro. To win the hearts of the women, Tamino and Papageno must undergo severe trials.
