Can one individual represent the will of all? Rienzi, a man from the Roman bourgeoisie, seeks to end the aristocratic rule in his hometown. However, as he comes to power, humanist ideals gradually fade away. By the time an assassination attempt is made on him, a bitter power struggle ensues.
