About
Did Richard Wagner, when he first turned towards salvation in the Flying Dutchman, already know that he was discovering the central theme of his artistic life? In his final work, Parsifal, premiered in Bayreuth in 1882, not only does a single individual wait, but the entire society awaits a savior – carried by the hope of one day meeting the one who is destined for this task. Parsifal can only achieve this when he has become 'knowing through compassion'. A process that may take many years, perhaps an entire lifetime. Yet there are forces that seek to hinder him on his path. Will Parsifal be ready to serve the community? The stage premiere Parsifal continues to overwhelm to this day. Can art also contribute to salvation?
