About
The Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra (OSMG), together with the Minas Gerais Lyric Choir (CLMG), will close the 2025 season with a special performance dedicated to Christmas repertoire. Conducted by Maestro André Brant, "Christmas Concert: From Baroque to Jazz" features special guest performances by Barbara Brasil (mezzo-soprano), Sandro Assumpção (tenor), and Filipe Santos (baritone). The Minas Gerais Youth Choir and the BeHoppers dance group will also participate. Over two nights, the audience will experience a celebration that spans centuries and styles, from the Baroque style of Johann Sebastian Bach to the lightness of contemporary jazz. The performances will take place on December 18th and 19th (Thursday and Friday) at 8:00 PM at the Grande Teatro Cemig Palácio das Artes. Tickets are available at affordable prices at the theater box office and on the Eventim platform. In the first part of the concert, with the participation of the invited soloists, the atmosphere is grand, with the cantata "Jauchzet, frohlocket" ("Rejoice, exult"), which opens Bach's "Christmas Oratorio." This work, which premiered in 1734, is a cornerstone of Christmas sacred repertoire, characterized by festive choirs and harmonies that made the German composer a symbol of Western music. After an intermission, the concert advances almost three centuries and enters the world of jazz with a selection of arrangements by Fred Natalino, pianist of the Minas Gerais Lyric Choir. Works such as "Jingle Jazz Opening," "Silent Night," "Christmas Medley," "Swinging with the Saints," and "Mr. Santa" will be performed with a lot of energy, reinforced by the participation of the BeHoppers dance group, which brings the charm of swing and lindy hop to the stage. "Christmas Concert: From Baroque to Jazz" is organized by the Ministry of Culture, the Government of Minas Gerais, the State Secretariat of Culture and Tourism of Minas Gerais, and the Clóvis Salgado Foundation. The activities of the Clóvis Salgado Foundation are supported by Cemig, the main sponsor of the Vale Cultural Institute and Grupo Fredizak, and the Instituto Unimed-BH, ArcelorMittal, and Usiminas, as well as Vivo, with the APPA – Culture & Heritage as a co-organizer. The Palácio das Artes is part of the Liberdade Circuit, which brings together more than 50 venues with the most varied forms of artistic and cultural expression, in a transversal relationship with tourism. This initiative is made possible through the State Law for Cultural Incentives (LEIC) and the Federal Law for Cultural Incentives. Vale-Cultura. Federal Government, Brazil: on the side of the Brazilian people. Closing a great season — André Brant, assistant conductor of the OSMG, highlights the celebratory nature of the performance and the dialogue that connects the two parts. "We aimed to present two types of repertoire: first, the opening cantata of Bach's "Christmas Oratorio," with a more erudite approach. Then, we traveled almost three centuries to jazz, which also carries Baroque influences, especially from Bach himself. The audience will recognize, in Fred Natalino's arrangements, traditional Christmas melodies and themes. It will be a very special concert, with almost 200 people on stage, closing the season in a grand style," says the maestro.
