Richard Strauss: A Life in Music

Rafael Payare leads us into an extraordinary musical self-portrait: Ein Heldenleben, a true biopic before its time, where Richard Strauss casts himself as a modern hero. Surrounded by enemies, allies, loves, and triumphs, Strauss paints his world in bold strokes, armed with a blazing orchestra, resplendent brass, and colors of unparalleled richness—extending Beethoven’s cherished theme of heroism. From Beethoven, we hear the Fourth Piano Concerto, a poetic breath that slips past convention to invent its own future. Jaeden Izik-Dzurko, the young Canadian prodigy and winner of the 2022 OSM Competition and the 2024 CMIM, embraces this audacity with radiant clarity. From Beethoven’s ideals to Strauss’s orchestral confidences, this program explores legend, individuality, and creative freedom.
