About
Dance: A quest for inner peace, an attempt to overcome conflict, abandonment, and oblivion. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui was a teenager when his father died. Thirty years later, now a world-renowned choreographer, he unsuccessfully searched for his grave in a crowded cemetery in Tangier. It is still his father that he seeks through this very personal creation, a collaboration between the Ballet of the Grand Theatre of Geneva and Eastman. In Arabic, "Ihsane" means an ideal of goodness, kindness, and generosity. In Belgium, the name unfortunately also evokes a racist and homophobic crime that occurred in 2012 in Liège: Ihsane, a young homosexual of Moroccan origin, was brutally murdered outside a nightclub. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui wants to pay tribute to him with this performance. Alongside an artistic team that reflects the dynamism and vitality of the region to which he is connected through his ancestors, the choreographer reveals the invisible threads that connect us, despite the current identity-based narratives. This production is part of Troika Dance.
