M. Butterfly

Based on a true story, M. Butterfly explores the passionate affair between French diplomat René Gallimard and Song Liling, an opera singer who is secretly a Chinese spy. Huang Ruo's 2020 opera subverts gender norms and cultural power dynamics, inspired by Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Directed by Carolyn Kuan, the European premiere features Robin Adams and Kangmin Justin Kim. The production, staged by Krystian Lada, offers a unique perspective on illusion versus reality. Young audiences under 30 can attend the Young Opera Evening with exclusive benefits.
