Winterreise

Recital « I must take a path from which no one has ever returned... » From Winterreise by Franz Schubert, a traveler, wounded by unrequited love, wanders through a desolate winter landscape, yearning for the peace of death. This cycle of lieder, one of the composer's last works, is among his most moving compositions. Within the intimate framework of the lied, Schubert succeeds, more than any other, in expressing a wide range of emotions, from intense desire to abyssal despair and abandonment. The baritone Matthias Goerne and the pianist Markus Hinterhäuser, who have interpreted this cycle together for many years, delve into the heart of these 24 lieder, marked by profound dramatic intensity, while a video by the renowned visual artist William Kentridge further enhances the expressive power of the work.
