About
A New Year's Concert in Paris with the Orchestre symphonique de la Monnaie and Alain Altinoglu In 1926, George Gershwin was 28 years old when he decided to go to Paris to study under Maurice Ravel. The encounter was cordial and warm, but the idea of taking lessons quickly faded: 'Better to be a first-rate Gershwin than a second-rate Ravel!'. He returned home with Parisian horns in his luggage. Two years later, he integrated them into the orchestration of his American in Paris, a truly effervescent ode to the City of Light. Gershwin transposed in music the animated boulevards, monuments along the Seine, cafes and Parisian nightlife, in an expressive and irresistibly rhythmic rhapsody, punctuated with a subtle jazzy touch. A decade later, Manuel Rosenthal, himself a student of Ravel, received a commission from the Ballets russes de Monte-Carlo for a new ballet music. While accompanying them on an American tour, the Parisian orchestrated an adaptation of Jacques Offenbach's operetta La Vie parisienne, delivering a score perfectly capturing the lightness and charm of nights in the French capital. Devilish rhythms, delicate waltzes, fleeting romances and champagne until the early morning: the year 2027 promises under the sign of the joy of living, with Parisian accents!
