About
"Yes, he loved him, loved him deeply – but don't forget that he achieved poetic freedom through years of study. If you delve into the depths of his work, you'll see that his genius wasn't just revealed in his final symphony." This was Robert Schumann's comment in 1834 about Ludwig van Beethoven, who left behind a multifaceted cycle of nine symphonies. Each symphony is part of a larger development – but each is also a world in itself: Even in his first two works, one can find a certain boldness towards tradition. The fact that he often reflected on the changing times can be heard in the myth-laden "Eroica," while Schumann called the friendly Fourth and Fifth "Greek slender maidens" and praised E.T.A. Hoffmann, who was working in Bamberg at the time, for describing them as a "continuously rising climax." The Sixth is a musical journey, the Seventh is incredibly dance-like, and the Eighth is quite humorous – and the wonderful Ninth ends with the moving "Ode to Joy." We present these symphonic peaks in the key centers of European music that Beethoven shaped: in the Rhineland, where he took his first artistic steps, in Prague, where he often stayed, and in Vienna, where he died after many successes 200 years ago – and just before, he said these moving words: "I close my eyes in the blessed certainty that I have left a light on Earth."
