About
"It should not fill the ears, but move the heart." This was the sentiment of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach about the music of his famous father – and the opening symphony of the 1731 "Ratswahlkantate" BWV 29, composed by the Baroque composer, is a brilliant introduction to this concert. The concert features a young and now internationally renowned organist: the South Korean Sunkyung Noh, who will perform the program together with our 2nd concertmaster, Minkyung Sul. It creates a wonderful connection from the past to the present. The Renaissance work by the Englishman Thomas Tomkins alternates between lively and contemplative music. The g-minor Chaconne by the Italian Tomaso Antonio Vitali, written around 1745, has been arranged several times, and one of the most romantic versions was created in 1911 by the Belgian Léopold Charlier. The Passacaglia from the 1883 eighth organ sonata by Joseph Rheinberger achieves its effect through its increasing variations over a constant bass line. The avant-garde piece "Fragment" by the Korean-German composer Isang Yun, created in 1975, is distinguished by its fascinating transformations and dynamic variations. "Fratres," which was premiered in 1977 and is available in many arrangements, is one of the key works of Arvo Pärt. The composition "Carillon" by 1917, one of the American Leo Sowerby's youthful works, sounds like a carillon – and the moving finale of Louis Vierne's last organ symphony from 1930 brings the concert to a close.
