About
Born in Bamberg, organist Katharina Königsfeld is known for her often unconventional concerts. This time, she brings together a surprising instrumental ensemble to captivate the audience: she collaborates with the Melton Tuba Quartet, which also includes our long-standing orchestra member, Heiko Triebener. The ensemble, founded in 1987, describes itself as "the only, but certainly not ordinary, professional tuba quartet in Germany." The program combines popular classics in a new guise with some discoveries: The program opens with Alexandre Guilmant's "Grand Chœur" and Rossini's fiery "Tarantella napoletana." The Baroque pieces also feature a lot of rhythm: Bach's "Badinerie" from his second orchestral suite, as well as the march from his cantata "Auf, schmetternde Töne der muntern Trompeten" – and an excerpt from André Camprós opera "Idoménée." The contemporary composer Enjott Schneider views the piece "Tarot" as "a metaphor for life," which, alongside other aspects, represents "the joy of movement" in his work. Henri Mulet's festive piece "Carillon Sortie" from 1911 then imitates the sound of church bells. This is followed by the 1967 hit "What a Wonderful World," as well as Brazilian soundscapes by Wolf Kerschek, the classical music prize winner. The wonderful ballad "The Carol of the Angels" comes from the late folk singer John Jacob Niles – and the concert ends with Rossini's fast allegro from the overture to "William Tell" and the indestructible "Flower Waltz" from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker."
