About
Musicians: Ari Þór Vilhjálmsson, violin; Þórunn Ósk Marinósdóttir, viola; Sigurgeir Agnarsson, cello; Xun Yang, double bass; Domenico Codispoti, piano. The Chamber Music Club is celebrating its 70th anniversary, with the club's first concerts taking place in Melaskóla on February 7, 1957. The program featured approximately one hundred guests, including performances of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" arranged by Björn Ólafsson, concertmaster of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, and performances by Einars Vigfússon, leader of the cello section of SÍ, and Árna Kristjánsson, pianist. After an intermission, the group performed Schubert's "Quintet in C Major," with Jón Sen on viola and Erwin Köppen on double bass. It is likely that few of the concertgoers realized that the club would become the leading center for chamber music in the country and that the activities would continue uninterrupted for the next seven decades. The program for these first concerts will be repeated on the 70th anniversary on February 7, 2027, by a group of free musicians: Þórunn Ósk Marinósdóttir, Sigurgeir Agnarsson, and Xun Yang are leaders in the violin, cello, and double bass sections of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. They will be joined by Italian pianist Domenico Codispoti, who is well-known to the Icelandic concertgoers, and Ari Þór Vilhjálmsson, artistic director of the Chamber Music Club. The Chamber Music Club is in collaboration with the Icelandic Sunday School in Hörpu. The concerts take place in the Northern Lights.
