About
Performers: Peter Bjornsson, violin; Gudbjart Hakonarson, viola; Urh Mrak, cello; Elena Postumi, piano. The concert will feature works by three composers who share the common characteristic of having been born in the 19th century and experiencing significant social changes during their lifetimes, all of whom lived through World War I. The three works to be performed at the concert were all composed between 1885 and 1919. The concert will begin with the Serenade in C major for string trio by Ernő Dohnányi, one of the most important Hungarian composers, who enjoyed international recognition as a composer, pianist, and conductor. The Serenade is a powerful and vibrant work in five movements, and its influences can be heard in the works of Brahms and Hungarian folk music. Next, Gudbjart Hakonarson and Elena Postumi will perform the Lyrica Suite No. 1 in F major by Paul Hindemith, one of the most influential composers of the early 20th century. Hindemith was originally a violinist, but he became a violist in his thirties, when he composed the Lyrica Suite. As the composer learned, Gudbjart has always played the violin, but he gained a permanent position with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in 2026, and he will perform the Lyrica Suite publicly for the first time. After a break, all the performers will then present the Piano Quartet in C minor by Richard Strauss, which he composed at the age of 22, and he himself played the piano part when the work was first performed in 1885. Strauss is best known for his large symphonic works, such as Don Juan, Heldenleben, and Alpine Symphony, and he composed only a few chamber works in his youth, so this is the first time that the piano quartet has been performed at the Kamermusiekklub's concert. The Kamermusiekklub is in partnership with the Sigilda Sunday Service in Harpa. The concert will take place in the Northern Lights.
