Mälkki, Schultz e.a.

»Why have you lived?«, Gustav Mahler wrote of his Second Symphony. »Why have you suffered? Is it all just one great, terrible joke? We have to answer these questions somehow if we are to go on living.« His monumental work explodes all conventions and was intended to do nothing less than confront these enormous existential questions. Accordingly, its five movements follow death and hope to the beyond as a programme: Where memories of »soulful moments«, »scream and despair« – and the comforting faith in resurrection are heard.
