Igor Levit’s cycle of the Beethoven piano sonatas has been called “utterly absorbing … a magnificent achievement” (Gramophone) and “a fresh and invigorating survey for our times” (London’s The Times). Tonight’s program—part two of Levit’s complete sonata cycle at Carnegie Hall—features the intimate Op. 14 sonatas; the melodically rich, tonally unique Op. 78; the extremely popular and unusually programmatic “Les adieux” Sonata; and the Op. 7 Sonata, an often-overshadowed piece in this oeuvre, in which “Levit finds an energy and sparkle that lights it up … [he] reveals Beethoven the visionary” (Gramophone).
