About
Sir Simon Rattle conducts The Philadelphia Orchestra in an unforgettable orchestral showpiece by longtime friend and collaborator John Adams. The composer describes his three-movement Harmonielehre as “parody of a different sort … shades of Mahler, Sibelius, Debussy, and the young Schoenberg are everywhere in this strange piece. [It] looks at the past in what I suspect is ‘postmodernist’ spirit, but … it does so entirely without irony.” It’s been a massive hit in performances by many of the world’s leading orchestras, including several with Rattle at the helm. The program also features Debussy’s La mer and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2, perennial favorites that are beloved for their lush harmonies, vivid colors, and sumptuous orchestration.
