The Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) is one of the world's great opera companies, based in the Nationaltheater on Max-Joseph-Platz in Munich. The house — rebuilt after World War II destruction and reopened in 1963 — seats around 2,100 and presents operas, concerts, and ballet throughout the year. Its annual opera festival in June and July, the Münchner Opernfestspiele, is one of the highlights of the European cultural calendar.
