About
The Bucharest-based mezzo-soprano Meda Topirceanu presents the work of the unforgettable Romanian global star Maria Tănase (1913–1963), who, particularly during the interwar period, introduced traditional Romanian and Ottoman-influenced music to audiences in Europe and the USA. To this day, Maria Tănase’s work remains at the heart of Romania’s cultural identity. Meda Topirceanu interprets these songs in a contemporary Romanian bel canto style with a strong Ottoman influence. She is accompanied by the »Constantin Mirea Quartet«, whose members are descendants of Constantin Mirea (1923–1982), the first violinist in Maria Tănase’s orchestra. The songs performed are all of folk origin and were arranged and orchestrated in 2026 by the Bucharest composer Ioan Dobrinescu.
