About
"If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?" Throughout the history of music, many composers have chosen to conclude works in a major key after journeys through darker minor tonalities. This musical transformation symbolizes the resilience of the human spirit—the belief that, even after enduring life's greatest hardships and passing through its darkest valleys, one can still emerge into light and hope. Continuing her Journey Through Time recital series, pianist Joan Chuan-I Huang presents Toward the Light, a program inspired by this profound journey of transformation. The recital features Bach's Italian Aria with Variations in A Minor, Weber's Piano Sonata No. 3 in D Minor, Busoni's Elegies, and Tausig's The Ghost Ship—works that portray trials, struggle, and ultimately redemption through light. In contrast, Liszt's Les Cloches de Genève (The Bells of Geneva) offers a moment of serene contemplation. Depicting the tranquil waters of Lake Geneva beneath a starlit sky, this poetic nocturne evokes a vision of hope, peace, and the promise of happiness.
