About
Gustav Mahler composed 'Das himmlische Leben' from the folk song collection 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' not only as a song but later also incorporated it into the finale of his 4th Symphony. In this concert, a third version stands at the center of a program that otherwise also dedicates itself to the song and the charming. The arrangement for Soprano, Clarinet and Piano refers to a configuration that Spohr and Schubert had already used. Schumann also appreciated the cantabile possibilities of the Clarinet, as his Fantasiestücke op. 73 show. And then there is still the Romance for Clarinet and Piano by Brahms' pupil Marie Elisabeth von Sachsen-Meiningen: A piece that she herself considered a 'Dilettante Composition', but which was already popular in an orchestral arrangement during her time.
