La Calisto

A masterpiece of Venetian Baroque opera, composed by one of its leading figures. Created and staged around the middle of the 17th century, Francesco Cavalli's La Calisto is distinguished by its musical richness and the exceptional clarity of its characters, as well as by a demanding libretto full of serious and comical situations and characters. The plotlines are complex and labyrinthine, the scene changes and turns of events are surprising. The most powerful of all passions, love, is the driving force that governs all the characters, whether they are gods, nature spirits, or humans. Director Stefan Herheim will stage this kaleidoscope of words and sounds in a "Baroque science fiction" aesthetic, taking full advantage of the thematic diversity and color that this opera contains, culminating in a starry sky. And Christina Pluhar, with her ensemble L'Arpeggiata, will unleash the musical magic.
