About
An icy chill pervades the Spanish royal court: The heir to the throne, Don Carlo, loses his fiancée, Elisabetta, due to political reasons, to his father, the Spanish King. The Crown Prince is also unable to realize his political ambitions. The King, in turn, is powerless against the staunch Grand Inquisitor. Only Carlo's friend, Rodrigo, seems to be able to overcome the constraints of politics and personal life. However, his bold dream of freedom leads to a catastrophe. In almost all of the characters in Verdi's 1867 opera, the theme of the incompatibility of politics and private happiness is explored, creating a strikingly modern depiction of society.
