Tosca

Only for art's sake does the celebrated singer Tosca live, until political intrigues suddenly intrude into the lives of the artist and her lover, the painter Cavaradossi. When he hides the political refugee Angelotti, he comes under the scrutiny of the ruthless police chief Scarpia, who has long been watching Tosca. In order to save Cavaradossi, Tosca must not only betray Angelotti, but also surrender to Scarpia. Few operas so intricately weave together political machinations and personal passions as Puccini's Tosca from 1900. And in 1902, the drama about love, jealousy, betrayal, and power was first performed in Dresden. In 2009, director Johannes Schaaf found a timeless way to tell the story.
