Tosca

The celebrated soprano Tosca lives solely for the arts, until political intrigues abruptly enter the lives of the artist and her beloved, the painter Cavaradossi: When he hides the political fugitive Angelotti, he comes under the scrutiny of the ruthless police chief Scarpia, who has long had his eye on Tosca. To save Cavaradossi, Tosca must not only betray Angelotti but also submit to Scarpia. Few operas intertwine political arbitrariness and personal passions as closely as Puccini's Tosca from 1900. And already in 1902, the drama of love, jealousy, betrayal, and arbitrariness experienced its German premiere in Dresden. In 2009, director Johannes Schaaf found a timeless narrative approach for the piece.
