About
The spring edition of the "Classics on Ołowiance" series, showcasing the richness of Polish chamber music. The concert features two important works of Polish chamber music – Juliusz Zarębski's Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 34, and Kazimierz Wiłkomirski's String Quartet. Although composed in different eras, they share a reflection on Polish identity and the power of chamber dialogue. Zarębski wrote his Quintet in 1885, at the end of his life. It is one of the most important works of Polish Romanticism, combining expressiveness with rich color and a narrative approach to form. The four movements move from a dramatic beginning, through lyrical and tense moments, to a final closure of musical ideas. Wiłkomirski composed his Quartet in 1942, in a completely different historical context. His music, more focused and intimate, still retains a strong expressiveness and narrative quality. The composer, who was also a cellist and pedagogue, treats tradition flexibly – some parts of the work have later been revised, which highlights their openness to different interpretations. The pairing of the two works shows the path from late Romanticism to the 20th century – from Zarębski's piano-dominated style to Wiłkomirski's more intimate language. However, they share a common idea: telling stories about the world through the chamber dialogue of instruments. The artists will present two beautiful compositions, united by a significant history. Both works showcase the power of the string quartet – the combination of instruments considered essential for chamber music. They demand extraordinary balance, coordination, and a shared tone from the musicians. Dominika Glapiak will perform the piano part in Juliusz Zarębski's Quintet.
