About
Nicholas DiEugenio – violin
Mimi Solomon – piano
The concert program combines the works of Brahms with those of American and Polish composers, creating a musical dialogue about memory, transformation, and the evolution of the violin and piano duet tradition. The centerpiece of the program is Brahms's Sonata No. 2 in A major for violin and piano. Its reflective character permeates the entire four-part work, featuring graceful melodies, subtly swaying Hungarian dance rhythms, and an intimate dialogue between the violin and piano. The warmth and lyricism of the sonata serve as a starting point for the other pieces presented during the concert.
"Sky Was Good for Flying" by David Kirkland Garner, a lyrical and contemplative piece, was composed specifically for Nicholas DiEugenio and Mimi Solomon in 2016. The composer draws inspiration from Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata, creating his own, dreamlike and contemplative sound world that provides a striking contrast, yet also a fascinating complement to Brahms's sonata.
In contrast, Karol Szymanowski's Romance, Op. 23, combines a rich, late-Romantic chromaticism with beautiful melodies rooted in Polish musical tradition. The result is a poetic musical language with a unique, fully individual character.
