About
The "Music Explained" series dedicates this program to two works for wind quintet, an ensemble consisting of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, which gained popularity in chamber music from the 19th century. The concert begins with Carl Nielsen's Quintet for Winds, Op. 43, composed in 1922. The final movement is based on a choral theme by the composer himself, along with eleven variations. The three short pieces by Jacques Ibert, written in 1930, are also performed. The work originated from stage music for "Le Stratagème des Roués," an adaptation of a comedy by George Farquhar, and Ibert later collected three fragments for independent performance. The presentation includes initial commentary from Arturo Cuevas and the performance by the Musicum Vivax wind quintet.
