About
In celebration of the 475th anniversary of the University of Mexico, this program aims to remind us that the history of higher education in our country is not only found in books and classrooms, but also through music, which accompanied the intellectual and spiritual development of entire generations and is now an essential part of the cultural heritage shared by the Colegio de San Ildefonso and the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The program reconstructs the musical environment that surrounded the Colegio de San Ildefonso for over two centuries, one of the most important educational centers in New Spain. The tour begins in the early decades of the 17th century, when polyphonic music and the novohispano villancico began to acquire their own identity thanks to composers such as Gaspar Fernández and Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla. It continues with the musical splendor of the Cathedral of Mexico, represented by Antonio de Salazar, whose work reflects the artistic richness of the viceregal capital. Alongside these works, pieces from the Sánchez Garza Collection are included, a collection that preserves the repertoire used in novohispano churches and schools, and which allows us to get closer to the everyday musical practice outside the major cathedral centers.
