About
In this concert, you will hear music unlike anything you've heard before – because Swedish organist Gunnar Idenstam is considered an extremely innovative artist, who is equally at home in both classical and contemporary music. At the beginning of his exciting program, he presents moving themes from films and video games such as "Battlefield 1942," "Minecraft," "Black Hawk Down," and "Harry Potter." This is followed by a lavish arrangement of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." Almost immediately after its premiere in 1937, the work became one of the most popular pieces. It is based on Latin and Middle High German texts that the composer discovered in a bookstore in Würzburg and described as: "What moved me was exclusively the captivating rhythm and the imagery of these poems." The transformation for the organ enhances the suggestive effect and focuses on the rich variety of colors in this opulent work. Finally, Gunnar Idenstam plays an equally spectacular excerpt from his successful "Metal Angel" suites. The title refers to the metal genre of rock music, but also to the organ with its metal pipes and its angelic form. The pieces utilize the full range of the instrument to express the idea of such beings in a Gothic fantasy world – as Idenstam himself says: "The music always comes to me from a source without words, and the story only emerges later. And it is about angels of all kinds. I leave it to the listeners to decide what each sound image evokes internally."
