About
"Too late, too late!" These words are said to have been Beethoven's last, in 1827 – and this is the piece that we commissioned from Jüri Reinvere. The Estonian composer, lyricist, and essayist has repeatedly caused a stir, including with his opera "Minona" in 2020, which focuses on Beethoven's possible daughter – and we are very eager to see what tribute he will now create. Afterwards, we will play romantic music from two of Beethoven's successors: Mendelssohn was particularly influenced by his "powerful late works," but then went his own way. He said about his violin concerto, which was premiered in 1845: "I feel that with each piece, I am getting closer to writing exactly what I want." Ferdinand David, the dedicatee of the concerto, was convinced that even "the angels in heaven" would be delighted by it. The program ends with Bruckner's symphonic masterpiece, which Beethoven's compositions were seen as the ultimate standard. His admiration was so great that in 1888, when the grave of the genius was opened for transport to the Vienna Central Cemetery, he deeply moved kissed the skull. However, before the ninth, he was almost afraid and once said: "I don't want to start with the ninth, I don't dare, because Beethoven also ended his life with the ninth." Despite this, Bruckner continued to work on the symphony until his death in 1896, and a reviewer after the posthumous premiere of its final adagio said: "His tones sound as if they come from another world, into which the master has gone."
