About
Performers: Sigurbjörn Bernharðsson, violin; Gunnhildur Daðadóttir, violin; Þórunn Ósk Marinósdóttir, violin; Rita Porfiris, viola; Sigurður Bjarki Gunnarsson, viola; Bryndís Halla Gylfadóttir, cello; Át the concert, there is a unique opportunity to hear two of the most important string trios of the 20th century. The German Gideon Klein composed his trio in 1944 in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, and completed it only a few days before he was sent to Auschwitz. The Russian Alfred Schnittke lived and worked mainly in Moscow, but studied composition as a young man in Vienna, where he was inspired by the composers of the late Viennese School. He dedicated his string trio to one of these composers, Alban Berg, who was born in 1985. Two years earlier, Jón Nordal composed his third work for strings, a Duo for violin and cello. The final work of the concert will be one of the last chamber works by Johannes Brahms, the famous String Quartet No. 2 in G major, Op. 111. The performers are among the leading Icelandic string players, with Sigurbjörn Bernharðsson, professor of violin at Oberlin College in the United States, being particularly noteworthy. Before teaching, he was a member of the acclaimed Pacifica String Quartet for 17 years. He played with the quartet at approximately 90 concerts per year in all the most prestigious concert halls in the world, and won a Grammy Award in the category of Best Chamber Music Performance in 2009. The Chamber Music Club is in collaboration with the Sunday services in Harpa. The concerts will take place in the Northern Lights.
