Almost 100 years after the premiere of the Brecht-Weill opera »Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny« in Leipzig, the original premiere orchestra is now performing two concert performances of one of the greatest scandals of the Weimar Republic. Shortly after its premiere in 1930 in Leipzig, the opera was denounced as »obviously the worst communist propaganda«, after supporters of the NSDAP had planned a disruption that caused disturbances so severe that the continuation of the performance almost became impossible. The »Alabama Song« from this opera (»Oh, moon of Alabama, we now must say good-bye ...«) is known to everyone, even if only through the cover version by »The Doors«. Sponsored by the New York Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, this concert is certainly a highlight of the season and continues the »Tacheles« focus for the year of Jewish culture in Saxony 2026.
