About
Dalibor Karvay is an outstanding Slovakian violinist who has chosen to join the Łódź Philharmonic as an artistic resident this season. He has previously performed here in various capacities, both as a soloist and as a conductor, leading the orchestra from the violin desk. He is a professor at the University of Music in Vienna and an active soloist, and until recently, also served as concertmaster of the Wiener Symphoniker. In Łódź, he will present pieces that are not frequently performed, one of which is Igor Stravinsky's D-major Violin Concerto – a significant neoclassical work from almost a century ago. "Stravinsky himself wrote that he deliberately omitted this piece from his repertoire because he was primarily focused on the relationship between the violin and the orchestra," explains the artist. "As a result, the piece has a texture that is more akin to chamber music than to a traditional virtuoso concert – and I believe that makes it particularly fascinating." The program will also include two symphonic poems: "Sad Story" by Mieczysław Karłowicz and "Don Juan" by Richard Strauss, both of which deeply inspired and influenced the Polish composer, particularly in his use of the orchestra. The Łódź Philharmonic will be conducted by Paweł Przytocki.
