About
"If I had known that the cello was capable of such things, I would have composed this concerto myself!" – Johannes Brahms reportedly said about Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto in A minor. The Czech composer masterfully utilized the capabilities of the solo instrument. This concerto is the last work composed during Dvořák's two-and-a-half-year stay in the United States. It serves as a summary of his previous works, as evidenced by reminiscences and quotations from his operas and songs, as well as "echoes" of his Symphony No. 9, "From America." The solo part will be performed by South Korean cellist Tae-Yeon Kim, who has gained international recognition for her exceptional musicality and achievements at a very young age. She won second place and the Audience Award at the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels this year. Two years earlier, she impressed with her performance on the Vistula River, winning first place and nine special awards at the 12th International Witold Lutosławski Cello Competition. "The competition is a great tool for me to improve my cello playing. (…) The competitions motivate me to self-improvement," she said in an interview with Barbara Rogala ("Ruch Muzyczny"). Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto in A minor, op. 104, performed by Daniel Müller-Schott and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dmitri Kitajenko:
