Dance in melody and rhythm in Tchaikovsky and Beethoven is set against a radical work by Giacinto Scelsi. A suite from Tchaikovsky’s »The Nutcracker« transports us into the fairy-tale world of ballet with its characteristic dances, shimmering colours and memorable melodies. Scelsi’s »Quattro Pezzi su una nota sola«, by contrast, is a landmark of twentieth-century music that explores the nature of sound in an unconventional way. Can the sense of dance also be found in variations on a single note – or does this abundance of notes open up a new perspective?
