About
Bright radiance, dazzling light and joyful optimism! This Mozart evening during Advent with the CPE.Bach.Akademie.Hamburg, with its radiant splendour, is far more than just pre-Christmas contemplation and reflection. Even the »Exsultate, jubilate« for solo soprano and orchestra is a fireworks display of joy. This showpiece of Italian operatic vocal art was composed during Mozart’s third trip to Italy in 1773 for a performance at the Theatinerkirche San Antonio in Milan. Following the huge success of his opera »Lucio Silla«, which premiered in Milan in December 1772, the 17-year-old Mozart wrote this virtuoso solo cantata – almost as an aside – tailor-made for the opera’s title character, the famous soprano castrato Venanzio Rauzzini, as a warm-up exercise. The »Exsultate« was performed three weeks after the premiere of »Lucio Silla« and is one of Mozart’s most dazzling creations.
