NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Marek Janowski

Bruckner with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra – that is legend! And just as much are the concerts with Marek Janowski at the helm of the Hamburg musicians:innen. After having conducted Wagner, Brahms and Schumann here in recent years, the specialist in the symphonic repertoire of German Romanticism is now returning with a Bruckner symphony. Significantly, the designated Wagner conductor Janowski has chosen Bruckner's Third Symphony – the very work with which Bruckner explicitly paid homage to his idol Richard Wagner. Full of enthusiasm, the 'poor organist from Vienna' (so the not very flattering assessment by his admirer) had once traveled to Bayreuth to personally ask the 'master of masters' to accept the dedication of the Third Symphony. While the symphony received only polite approval from Wagner, it is now regarded as perhaps the first in which Bruckner's unmistakable personal style is already fully developed – especially in the final version conducted by Janowski, in which Bruckner removed all obvious Wagnerian quotations.
