『An incredibly passionate piece』, raves cellist Daniel Müller-Schott about Prokofiev's Symphony-Concerto op. 125, and calls the work a 『journey between desperate lyricism and motoric energy』. For the composer himself, his Cello Concerto was above all a source of anguish. The first version was composed between 1933 and 1938; however, it received little acclaim from audiences and colleagues. Therefore, Prokofiev decided in 1940 to revise it, and in 1950 he revised it again at the suggestion of cellist Mstislaw Rostropowitsch. In this form, as a Symphony-Concerto, the challenging piece eventually became a milestone in the cello repertoire. All's well that ends well.
